Susan Guevara was honored as the first recipient of the Pura Bel Pré Award in 1995 for her illustrations in Chato's Kitchen (written by Gary Soto), and won the award a second time for her illustrations in Chato and the Party Animals (Putnam, 2000). She has illustrated more than 20 books, including Chato Goes Cruisin', listed as of one of the 2005 New York Times 10 Best Illustrated Books of the Year; Isabel's House of Butterflies by Tony Johnston (Sierra Club, 2003); Lady in the Blue Cloak by Eric Kimmel (Holiday House, 2006), which was awarded the 2006 June Franklin Naylor Award; Tiger Tiger by Dee Lillegard (Putnam, 2002); The King's Commissioners by Aileen Friedman (Scholastic, 1995) and Arthur Levine's Boardwalk Princess (Tambourine, 1993). Most recently she illustrated Voice from Afar (Holiday House, 2008) and Numero Uno (Abrams, 2007).
